Have You Been Double Crossed Today?

Letter to my writer friend

Hey.

I understand the notion of Writer’s Block. The persistence of this
notion is tenacious. However it’s pernicious, and I just don’t buy into it.

Here’s what I mean.

When writing, there’s the notion that one will write to say the
things which need to be said. The implication is that the thoughts,
feelings, and experiences to be written have already
manifested themselves, and have already asserted themselves as
full blown ideas, come alive like Venus on the half shell.

A fair enough conception. It’s a rather common experience.

I just insist on seeing things differently.
Duh.

Most everything has an opposite; what then is another
way to look at this?

Well, one alternative, and this is the working model from which I
experience, is that a writer writes to find out what is to
be said. Rather than writing to say what is known, a writer
writes to learn. Not a new idea, nor is it original with me.

What is to be said will be found from the writing.

With that in mind, there will be no lack of inspiration. The
inspiration comes from the writing itself.

There’s more to it, but that’s what I’ve
scraped from underneath my finger nails.

Quit fucking being lazy, get to the business at hand.
